Stayin’ with a Def Squad theme for the week. Keith Murray chops it up with Guerrilla Journalism. He talks about his time in South Africa… including getting robbed for his laptop. He drops some real knowledge on the social situation out there in regard to the end of apartheid and such. Keith rambles quite a bit, but pay attention, he speaks on that realness.
I had to watch this video a few times and I still can’t understand a word this old guy is saying. Apparently he’s babbling some nonsensical racist garbage and if so, he definitely deserved the (spoiler alert) slushie that was dumped on him. I know there’s a lot of Budden fans out there and those that hate him, so if you somehow have missed this video, now’s your chance to watch Budden argue with an old man. How riveting.

They discuss EPMD’s position in the Golden Era and the celebrated albums of 1988. Damn that was 20 years ago… I’m really feelin’ old right now. Erick Sermon discusses what he think was his hottest record, and then discusses his dislike for K-Solo and the rumor about E-Double jumping out of the window. Oh yeah, and he paid $150,000 to get the Marvin Gaye sample in music cleared. DAMN. Part 2 coming shortly.
Yo Tim Westwood reps hip hop heavy. This Stat Quo/Dr. Dre beat is crazy. I can’t believe that track never took off. But that’s for another day. Erick Sermon absolutely bodied this verse. I’ve heard a variety of versions of this verse at some of his performances in the last 6 months. I think the first time I heard it was at a show headlined by Keith Murray. Dudes need to respect the legends… Erick Sermon included. On the topic of legends though… I get the feeling a lot of these dudes / hip hop legends are still stuck in a time-warp… NOT MUSIC WISE, but mentality wise. They fail to recognize the power of the internet, the importance of reaching out to an online audience, and that music is fast becoming a free commodity (or for many, it has already become that years ago). I hope Erick Sermon and Parrish Smith recognize this and take advantage with some creativity marketing to really bring out their new album. Hit the search for EPMD’s first single “Listen Up”.
